How To Schedule Hard Disk Defragmentation In Windows 7

Defragmentation of your computer hard disk is necessary to keep your Windows running at optimal speed. This also increases hard disk life. But in busy schedule, we tend to forget defragmenting hard disk.  Windows 7 in-built defragmentation utility lets you overcome this. Defragmentation Utility in Windows 7 has been revamped with new features.

The in-built utility is now more faster, consumes less system resources and has a scheduler. To schedule automatic defragmentation:

1. Click Start button.

2. Type “Disk Defragmentation” in the programs search box and press enter.

3. Click on”Configure schedule…” button.

4.  In the Modify Schedule dialog box, select the options “Frequency”, “Day”, and “Time” as desired.

5. Click “Select disks..” button.

6. In the following dialog box, you can select the Hard disks to include in scheduled defragmentation.

7. Click “OK” and save all the dialog box settings.

You are done. Windows 7 will automatically do the defragmentation at the specified date and time. All it needs to perform the task is PC to be in “ON” condition at the scheduled time!

    Since I changed to Vista, I also changed to a fully automatic third party defragger that runs in the background and doesnt require scheduling. Havent upgraded to Win 7 yet, but hope I dont have to use the built in defragger again. My defragger is fast and defrags really well even in low free space.

    You are right. There are many free alternatives which does better job. This article is for all those who would not like to install too many freewares in the system which upon time slows down the performance of Windows. All real-time defrag tools consume system resources and may effect on performance on a limited memory PC.
